Ashlyn is sixteen years old when she’s asked out on a date for the first time, and the proposition surprises her enough that she just stares, speechless, for a long moment. She doesn't know this boy, couldn’t possibly identify him beyond the Slytherin tie loosely knotted around his neck and a reasonable assumption that he's a seventh year because she doesn't think she's ever had any classes with him and he's certainly not younger than her. There's no reason for him to even know her name, much less have somehow developed any form of interest in her, and so her blue eyes remain flinty and cool as she blinks at him. If not for the faint pink flush dusting her cheekbones betraying that the question has flustered her, anyone passing by would think that the boy had merely asked to borrow a quill.
Next to her, Lita coughs to disguise a laugh but attempts to continue explaining Potions theory to Layla as if nothing out of the ordinary was occurring. Layla, however, is scowling ferociously - as ferociously as Layla can manage, at any rate, which is rather more reminiscent of a displeased kitten - and has very clearly stopped paying any attention to the older Ravenclaw. “No,” her cousin snaps petulantly, arms crossed as she ignores both Ashlyn and Lita exchanging surprised glances above her head. It's still rare for her to speak to anyone unless she has to, much less to speak in such a disrespectful tone. “She doesn’t want to go out with you, she will never want to go out with you, and you can go away now.”
They settle back into a mostly peaceful silence after that, Ashlyn finishing the last inches of her Transfiguration essay as Lita cheerfully quizzes Layla with only occasional snickers at Ashlyn's expense. It isn’t unusual for her to sit with the Ravenclaws at dinner but Layla's fingers are unusually tight around her wrist as the little blonde drags her over to the table and pushes her into the seat next to Damon. Layla takes a seat by Jared, which also isn’t unusual, but then proceeds to ignore her food and all attempts at conversation in favour of glowering balefully across the table at Damon. That, of course, only reignites Lita's mirthful snickers once she notices and Ashlyn closes her eyes, bemused but fairly certain she doesn’t want to know. Between strangers with inexplicable interest and Layla's sudden attitude shift, today has been an odd day.
