"I know two things you don't know," Nieve sang out brightly as she dropped into the chair next to Gabriel. McGonagall gave her a dark glare for daring to be cheerful during her class, though probably the fact that she was two minutes late didn't really endear her to the strict professor much either. Nieve shrugged it off easily. She was decent enough at Transfiguration that McGonagall didn't hate her and it wasn't like she'd missed anything anyway. Besides, what was the older witch going to do about it anyway? Only Snape gave detentions for being such a tiny bit late to class, and never to his Slytherins anyway. Detentions didn't bother Nieve; she hadn't had many, thanks in part to Larisa being Prefect and now Head Girl and unfairly indulgent towards her little sister's disregard for curfew, but another one wouldn't much matter. The prospect of losing points was of even less importance. She could earn back whatever she lost and more besides in Charms, which was indisputably her best subject. "Actually," she amended thoughtfully, " I know a great deal of things that you don't, but two in particular."
Nieve glanced across at Gabriel, meeting his amusement with a sparkling grin of her own. She could never stop her eyes softening for him, probably never would be able to completely stop loving him, but she was fourteen years old now. She was too old to keep dwelling own someone who never noticed the way she looked at him. Gabriel had enough girls fawning over him; she was too proud to let herself continue to be one of them. The best thing about being fourteen, Nieve was starting to think, was that she was beginning to grow into her looks. Certainly she would never equal Larisa's elegant beauty but her face held the promise of being pretty and her body was developing quite nicely, if she did say so herself. The best thing about being fourteen was that people were starting to notice her as more than they had previously recognised her to be.
"Número uno: Robert Alden asked me to go to Hogsmeade with him this weekend." Nieve kept her voice quiet to avoid being called out on talking while McGonagall was trying to teach, which really wasn't hard. After all, it wasn't like she was exceptionally excited by the idea of going out with Alden. He was a decent enough option for a first date, she supposed - because Larisa didn't agree with their dad on everything but she had firmly told Nieve that dating anyone until fourth year wasn't acceptable for any of the Ramírez daughters - in that he was attractive enough, two years older than her as a sixth year, and Captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team also. He did have a bit of a terrible reputation for playing with emotions and breaking hearts but no one was safer from those sort of games than Nieve, in her opinion. She was in no danger of falling in love with him. She liked him well enough, since he had made time to teach her some more advanced Charms work that her class wouldn't be covering for ages yet, but she didn't want him as anything more than a friend really. Perhaps it wasn't fair to Robert but his main attraction was that he thought she was pretty, and after years of being overlooked by the one boy she wanted, Nieve was just relieved to find that she could be appealing to someone.
It only took two tries to transfigure the poor hedgehog into a pincushion since Nieve had gotten bored and started reading ahead a few nights before, and then she turned her attention back to Gabriel after McGonagall passed by and approved their efforts. "Número dos," she continued with a sly smile, prodding gently at the pincushion to turn it back to a hedgehog and running a finger over its bristles lightly. As much as she disliked having to transfigure animals into other forms, this was often the closest she got to animals. No animals in the house. It wasn't the first rule of their family but it was somewhere in the top thirty, she was pretty sure. "My cousin has a crush on your brother's ward. It's adorable. He stutters and everything. His brothers are absolutely appalled at his ineptitude, naturally."
