“Oh good, we can tell Gabriel that we finally found a use for him. He calms people,” Lita stated sarcastically. Gabriel could evoke a lot of different feelings from people but it was highly rare to hear someone say that Gabriel was a calming influence. “I’ve heard myself called a lot of things, Jared, but a lady is definitely not one of them.” Lita looked amused, a small smile at the corner of her mouth. So perhaps she wasn’t the type of person who would leave someone to suffer. That didn’t mean that she wouldn’t expect to be fully recompensed for her time and effort afterwards.
“Shame about the wolf. But the cub will survive and live quite a merry life under Kris’s care.” Lita remarked light-heartedly, her thoughts too firmly entrenched in darker thoughts to let her say more on the topic of a sweet little wolf-cub. Jared seemed to have troubles of his own, judging by the unhappy tune coming from his harmonica but Lita didn’t ask, merely eyeing him in sisterly concern as she talked. It was better to let him talk about it only if he wanted to. “But what do you do when someone is sneakily trying to take away something that you love?” Lita asked quietly, her eyes troubled and stormy as she stared at the pile of Gabriel posters in the corner without even seeing them. She hadn’t meant to ask that question but it wasn’t possible to take back the words and act as if they had never hovered between the two of them so she would just wait for the answer. Jared was smart and rational, so much more than herself sometimes. Whatever he said as an answer would be worth keeping in mind when she finally got to tackle her problems.
Lita laughed cheerfully. “I’m quite happy to remain in my misguided belief that you haven’t been kissed, Jared. You’re the sweetest of your brothers and I’d quite like for you to remain that way. And if I won’t listen to any details of Rister’s or Gabriel’s dates, even going so far as to hex them silent when they persist in forcing me to listen to the horrors of their continuous dating, then I might as well give them someone to babble on to.” Lita grimaced, horrified by the thought, and clapped her hands over her ears exaggeratedly. “Don’t even joke about it! I forbid you to fall in love with an annoying girl who was at one point infatuated with Rister or Gabriel. And if you do then I’ll disown you as my almost-brother and refuse to visit you.” Lita raised an eyebrow at Jared, the laughter on her face fading and being replaced with seriousness. “I’m already being hunted down by girls who think I’ll get them dates with you or your brothers. I take immense pleasure in hexing them until they finally understand that I’m trying to train Rister and Gabriel into better dating habits. Hopefully I’ll never have to worry about you and Damon becoming like your brothers when it comes to dating. Two of them is quite enough.”

Jared laughed along with Lita. Gabriel and claming? Well, perhaps not. He was probably the most hard-working of the brothers, in the sense that he never minded doing some physical labour or generally being helpful and never complained about it. But, he was arrogant and tended to have a way of getting under Lita’s skin even better than Rister could. “Well, in order to survive some day, he will have to know how to calm the girl he finally settles on,” Jared modified his statement with a slight grin, “And the lady doth protest too much, methinks again. If you haven’t heard yourself being called a lady, then perhaps you haven’t been listening closely enough? Or have you been hearing, but listening?” Because Lita, while not being a girl afraid of doing something fun, eating, or breaking a nail, she was a lady.
“What will happen to the cub, will most likely depend on mom. I’m not at all sure she would tolerate a wolf in her home, so when the cub can handle living on its own, he’s most likely going back to the forest. Seeing that he was brought in while all of us were away, he might not take to all of us too kindly either,” Jared pointed out. Not that the animals lived badly in the forest either. Dad kept the forests clean, the animals have additional food taken in during colder winders, and the balance was kept. Jared peered at Lita thoughtfully, wondering what to answer. “Something you love? You fight for it. You’ll be just as sneaky, fight dirty if you have to, to keep it in tact. And you decide. Could your heart handle seeing fights and arguments tearing that something you love to pieces? Or would it be easier to keep a fond memory and move on. Just maybe that someone else loves the thing too. You fight if you feel you need to, and wish it the best if you think there are other options,” Jared shrugged helplessly, “I’m afraid I can’t offer you any better advice. But I’m not going to ask either, as you don’t seem to want to tell. Just remember you have friends when things get rough.”
Jared laughed and hugged Lita with one hand: “And it’s because I am sweet that I get kissed. And you suggested the option by promising to set me up with some chatty little bint my brothers have taken out previously. And I’ve seen the outcomes of the girls after they leave you. Some have tried to approach Rister and Gabriel after that complaining of how mean you were. That has always ended in them being blown off though, if it comforts you. Are the girls really that annoying towards you then? Or is it a that regular occurrence? Though what they do, suits Rister and Gabriel. And Damon is generally too busy to bother with dating.”

Lita was never quite sure what it was about Gabriel that riled her up so easily. It went beyond the feeling that she was thoroughly unnecessary where he was concerned and into something that she couldn’t quite grasp long enough to understand. Not that it mattered. Whether they had wanted her or not, the Graas’ had been part of her life for too long for her to not watch their backs without even realising it. “Right now, I can’t imagine Gabriel settling on just one girl. But she’ll have to be strong and patient if she’s going to love him without giving into the urge to strangle him.” There were times when she wanted to strangle him, and she loved him only as a younger brother. But that didn’t mean that she wanted to see him hurting. “Okay then, who are these mystery people who call me a lady?” Lita asked with a light smile.
“Aw, I’m not going to get to play with a wolf cub after all. How cruel of you to get my hopes up and then send them crashing down.” Ah well. Lita shrugged it off with only a little bit of regret that she hadn’t gotten a chance to see the cub. There were always more animals and more opportunities. Fight dirty? Yeah, Lita nodded slightly, she could do that. She had been fighting dirty for years and she was sneaky and smart enough to placate her parents after visiting Adrian and to convince them that she was the sweet, smart and obedient little Ravenclaw child they had wanted both her and her brother to be. Her older brother was too blunt and true to himself to pretend to be something he wasn’t just to keep their parents favour but Lita wasn’t above trickery and deceptions to ensure her future. But Jared was right. They would always be there for her when she needed them to save her. It was just her pride that always got in the way of asking for help even if she really needed it.
Lita scowled at Jared playfully. “You’ve never been kissed and that’s final. Nor are you going to spoil my fun by actually falling in love with one of the idiots I suggested setting you up with.” It was strange. For all that she scolded the boys for their protective natures toward Leandra and Morgana, Lita was exactly the same with all six of them. She just wasn’t as obvious or loud about it. “It used to be worse,” Lita shrugged and smiled. “Some girls will always believe that I only exist to pass along love messages to you and your brothers. I’m used to it. I just use them to practice new hexes and curses. It’s a suitable enough punishment without complaining to you boys and setting you four loose on them.”

“Gabriel isn’t planning on settling with just one girl right now. He’s enjoying his life too much as he is,” Jared stated with a shrug. The fact that the girl would have to have a character of her own went without saying. They were all taught to choose wisely by character if they wanted to settle down, because looks faded, passion cooled, and then you’d still need someone to love. A Graas loved once but loved for life. But Gabriel had hardly promised his hand or heart or life to someone, so Jared saw no reason in letting him enjoy his relatively wild life-style. He earned from the publicity he got after all. “Mystery people? Hardly that much of a hard choice. Your friends, family, anyone with a bit of common sense. A lady isn’t just someone who spends her day doing embroidery and being unable to do absolutely anything, but rather someone who gets the things done with class. Or perhaps that is from where the tradition to let the lady walk first or do your left side came from? You couldn’t entirely use her for a sword, but some more cold-hearted fellow could have easily used a woman as a living shield. And I’m sure there were enough cases when a lady took an arrow meant for her husband,” Jared explained with a light shrug.
“I said that mom wasn’t charmed of the idea. Not sure what will happen. It’s hard to say no to dad as well, though I do think the cub will be kicked out of the castle at least in the end. A wild animal should be allowed to keep his freedom and there are plenty of well-cared for forests around for him to play in,” Jared comforted randomly, merely chuckling and winking at Lita as she claimed that he had never been kissed. “No falling in love? But wouldn’t that be even more amusing for you? If we’re doing it for your amusement, then me making a fool out of myself would be even better for you, no?” Jared considered it for a moment. There wasn’t much they could entirely do in order to make the girls leave Lita alone. But at least she didn’t seem to be overly worried over it. “Let us know when they do get too much. I’m sure something can be figured out. Maybe some polyjuice for Rister or Gabriel to drink and blowing off a chance that we’d agree to a date in such a way in public. Though I do blame you for part of it yourself. You were the one who wanted to sell a date with all four of us during the Valentine’s Day auction the previous year.”
Jared blew a couple of notes from his harmonica, before putting it on the table. Resting his palms on the table behind him, he leaned backwards, closing his eyes and letting his head fall back. “I got an offer. It’s a quite prestigious music company, they offered a contract. A year as a testing period, during which I have 3 concerts, and give out one disc, one hit single. They worry over the administration, organising, I earn 65 per cent of profit. They have a good reputation in the music world and it’s pretty much an offer of a life-time. If I sign it, I’ll break the promise to myself to keep away from going professional until I’ve graduated from Hogwarts, as the contract will have to take effect now,” Jared said curtly, without shifting from his situation. He wanted to accept the offer, he really did. But he wasn’t sure if he should. What sort of an effect would it have on his grades and studies?

“I wonder what type of girl she would have to be, for Gabriel to fall in love,” Lita pondered inquisitively. She loved Gabriel as unequivocally as she loved his brothers and sisters but there were times when his very nature exasperated her. All of them annoyed her at times but Gabriel was the only one who seemed to have a talent for it. Rister, although the one she scolded most often, was probably the sibling who annoyed her least. It made her guilty to know that she didn’t trust them as much as she thought she should. Well, it wasn’t exactly that she didn’t trust them; she did. It was more that she needed to prove, to herself as much as to everyone else, that she wasn’t worthless, that she could handle everything on her own. And she still didn’t think that a lady was the best way to describe her but Lita dropped the subject gracefully, choosing not to argue the label. Jared would think what he wanted to anyway.
“I think your mum will be making the final decision,” Lita decided slowly. Cleo was a hard woman to argue with and she had little doubt that Kris wouldn’t just give in after a while. The wolf cub would be left to run free in the forests, Lita was sure. “I have no doubts that I’ll be amused when you fall in love, Jared. Someone will crash into your life and turn it upside down and I’ll be in the background, laughing in delight. But I also don’t want to see you with a broken heart. You’re my almost-brother; I have full rights to worry about you,” she reminded him mildly. Jared and Rister and Gabriel and Damon were always so busy worrying about Leandra and Morgana that it usually fell to Lita to be anxious about the boys. It didn’t matter whether you were male or female; hearts are fragile and can be broken easily and Lita had no desire to see any of them hurting. Unless, of course, they thoroughly deserved it. “Save your protectiveness for Leandra and Morgana – I can take care of myself. And I was going to share the money from the auction with you all!” Lita protested indignantly. “And it would have been a lot of money too, with all the girls who are obsessed with you or your brothers bidding for the date. Rister would have done it if everyone agreed, I’m sure of it.”
Lita watched Jared carefully, her eyes shadowed with concern. Oh. Lita blinked. Oh my. It sounded like a wonderful offer but she was more concerned with what Jared thought of it. “Forget the promise that you made to yourself, just for now,” she advised him softly. “Is this an offer that you want to take? Is this something that you really want to do right now? If you think that it’s the right deal for you, then maybe you should take it. If you don’t like it then, well, it’s only a year, not the rest of your life.” And that was just about the extent of her wise advice, Lita thought wryly as she jumped to her feet and pulled Jared to his. “And in the meantime, you can escort me to dinner,” Lita ordered him light-heartedly. “Because if you’re going to think and worry about your future then you should eat something first. You won’t get far if your stomach grumbles about having no food just when you’re about to make a decision. It disrupts your concentration and you forget what you were about to decide.”
